Recent cosmetics regulation evolution in India increased the need for alternatives methods in this country.
Since November 2014, import of cosmetics tested on animals is banned. This decision comes a few months after implementation of a national ban on cosmetics testing on animal in India’s labs. EPISKIN provides to the Indian market reconstructed human epidermis (RHE) for in vitro safety testing and develops academic partnering.
In February, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA)India bestowed a Humane Science Award to the Mahatma Gandhi-Doerenkamp Centre (MGDC), based in Tiruchirappalli, for Alternatives to Use of Animals in Life Science Education. The MGDC has tackled high-level research as well, holding 17 intensive 10-day training sessions on cell culture techniques and in vitro technology, educating nearly 300 researchers and scientists on modern, animal-free methods.
The MGDC's work with Episkin Academy in France has also resulted in three workshops, helping to integrate 3-dimensional in vitro methods that take the place of animals in cosmetics tests.

The MGDC-EPISKIN Academy workshops are organized every year in a new Indian University (Tiruchirappalli, Mumbai, New Delhi).
The fourth edition of the MGDC-EPISKIN Academy workshop will be held in Mumbai to the end of the year.
